    MANCHESTER is where the Royal Northern College of Music presents an annual chamber music festival, this year on French Connections. (8 – 12 March). We also have Opera North’s acclaimed Madama Butterfly with Anne Sophie Duprels.

    The great Canadian pianist and musical friends give recitals in idyllic Umbrian settings. We stay in a hotel right on the lakeside (and this is where Tony Pappano has his holiday home!) and spend the last day on the Piero della Francesca trail.

    JANACEK in BRNO and opera in VIENNA
    27 November – 5 December 2018

    Janáček’s operas Jenůfa and Šárka with Smetana’s Festival opera Libuše a staged performance of The Diary of One who Disappeared, choral works and a concert in the Villa Tugendhat are among the highlights of our first visit to the festival. We have grandstand seats at a reactment of the Battle of Austerlitz and we finish with a few days in Vienna.

    BERLIN FESTTAGE
    17 – 23 April 2019

    Wagner’s first and last successes – RIENZI and PARSIFAL - in iconic productions at the Deutsche Oper; an acclaimed MEISTERSINGER with veteran great Wagnerians joining Wolfgang Koch as Hans Sachs, and a new BETROTHAL IN A MONASTERY, Prokofiev’s lyrical comic opera with Violeta Urmana, both at the reopened Staatsoper unter den Linden under Daniel Barenboim. As if that is not enough, Anna Netrebko sings Verdi arias in the Philharmonie with Barenboim and the Staatskapelle; and at the Volksoper, Harry Kupfer directs Handels’s PORO, RE D’ITALIE. Of course we also view the art and architecture of Berlin with the city’s best guide Tom Abbott.

    WAGNER in BUDAPEST
    12 – 17 June 2019

    The relaunched Ring with the best acoustics in Europe (David Nice - December 2017). Bayreuth singers include our own Catherine Foster – seven years Bayreuth’s Brünnhilde. Ádám Fischer conducts and a boat brings us from and back to our idyllic spa hotel on the Margaret Island.

Robert Avery, who accompanies all these tours, founded Habsburg Heritage Cultural Tours in 1989. He read Modern History at Cambridge and then devoted twenty years to the Anglo-Austrian Society, pioneering cultural tours and helping to run the Youth and Music Festival in Vienna. He was editorial consultant to the Eyewitness Travel Guide to Vienna and was awarded the Silver Haydn Medal of the City of Eisenstadt. When not leading tours he can usually be found at the opera.
