After a long gap, we resume our tours to the Prague Spring festival which traditionally opens on
13 May, Smetana’s birthday, and starts with a procession of musicians from the cemetery to the concert hall and then a performance of Ma vlast, the composer’s tribute to his country. This year the opening concert is being given by the Vienna Philharmonic with Daniel Barenboim.
We also see Smetana’s iconic opera The Bartered Bride and the verismo masterpiece Giordano’s Andrea Chénier at the National Theatre and Le nozze di Figaro at the exquisite Estates Theatre. This was where Mozart presented the opera after its first Vienna performances, and it was such a success that Don Giovanni was commissioned and first staged there. The theatre was beautifully renovated in the early 1980s for the filming of Amadeus. All sung in the original language with English surtitles.
Our hotel is in the Old Town and will be the base for our exploration of the city – Old Town, Josefov (the Jewish town), Mala Strana (Lesser Town), Castle district with Cathedral and Lobkovitz collection, New Town. We walk and use trams for most of these tours.
More concerts and chamber recitals will be on offer and will be included in our itinerary.
